Together, Let’s Preserve HKU’s Legacy for the Future.

The Encaustic* floor tiles laid along the walkways of the Main Building are filled with footprints of generations of students, staff, alumni and friends since 1912. You are now invited to add your favourite colours to a collection of tile patterns. Simply choose a tile pattern, add your favourite colours, and make a donation to support the HKU Heritage Fund. A personalised tile will be generated for you to keep.

As a token of our thanks, a set of limited-edition Main Building pins will be given to the first 500 Tile Donors.

Add Colour to Your Personalised Tile

Step 1: Select donation amount

Upon making a donation, you will be able to choose from the following number of colours based on the amount contributed.

12 Colours

Donations towards HKU are cumulative and can be counted towards HKU Foundation membership with a donation of HKD 20,000.
Receipts will be issued for tax deduction purpose. Donations received by The University of Hong Kong are exempt from tax under section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance.

*The terminology for this particular type of tile is “Unglazed Encaustic” (or Inlaid). They are ceramic tiles in which the pattern or figure on the surface is made of different colours of clay. The pattern appears inlaid into the body of the tile so that the design remains as the tile is worn down. These surviving encaustic tiles in the Main Building are one of the best examples of the use of such materials in Hong Kong with regard to the design and intactness. Source: PURCELL
